Stevensville, MD - The rain held off just long enough for the participants of the first annual Kent Island
Volunteer Fire Department Capital Campaign Golf Tournament to get in 18 holes at the Queenstown Harbor Golf Links
on Tuesday, June 3rd.
This was the first event to officially start off the Capital Campaign that the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department
is organizing to raise funds for the new Fire Station.
"We didn't want to just raise money, but we also wanted to raise the community's awareness regarding the new fire station," explained Tom Helfenbein, the Golf Committee Chairman.Tom headed up the committee that also consisted of Marlene Davis of R & D Electric, Sandra Early of Sandra's Office Support and Bill Tumulty who is an active member of the KIVFD Advisory Council. Sandra Early, who previously worked for the Chamber of Commerce commented that, "The business community really stepped up to support this event. I know how often they are asked to donate and all the causes are worthy. We were able to raffle off items such as a chocolate Fire Truck donated by Chesapeake Chocolates (Island Plaza on Kent Island), not to mention the local restaurants and golf courses that donated gift certificates."
"It looks like we accomplished both of those goals!"
A few of the main sponsors were Kent Island True Value who sponsored the Putting Contest and CloseCall America who sponsored the banquet that was catered by Casual Catering. A complete list of sponsors is listed below.
The team that came in first place was none other than the team from the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Department. It consisted of Frank Russum, Scott McClyment, Donnie Anthony and Frank Smith. The second place team certainly gave them a run for their money! That team consisted of Todd Clark of Harborview and three of his business partners with Fairway Mortgage in Crofton, Rob Gloekler, Rich Gloekler and Mark Regal. Todd saw the tournament advertised in the Bay Times and decided to sign up. "The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department responded to an accident that my daughter was involved in and I thought this would be a great way to say thank you." The third place team was from the American Legion # 278. It consisted of Chet Knight, Hugh Ward, Paul Marshall and Jim Suter.
The winner of the Putting Contest, Steve Stout, who played on the official KIVFD team, won $345 but immediately donated $250 back to the Capital Campaign. Janet Duncan won both the Women's Longest Drive and the Women's Closest to the Pin contests. The Men's Longest Drive was won by Dudley Dixon, while Rob Gloekler won the Men's Closest to the Pin.
Tom Helfenbein commented that, "for a first year tournament, this was very successful. We learned a lot and look forward to next year!"The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank everyone who came out to play and the following businesses for their donations and sponsorships:
