Setting Up Netscape E-Mail

You need to have your screen name and password at this time. If you do not remember them, you can contact us and a staff member can assist you. In addition, these instructions assume that you have Netscape already installed on your computer. If you do not have a copy of Netscape, please download a copy from here and install it before proceeding.

Anatomy of an E-mail Address

If you don't know the difference between your screen name and e-mail address or domain, please take a moment to identify the parts of your e-mail address so that the following instructions will make more sense.

Your e-mail address resembles the following: johndoe@closecall.com

Every e-mail address contains:
  • 'screenname' (also called a user id or username) which in this case is johndoe
  • '@'
  • 'domain.com' which in this case is closecall.com

Let's Get Started!

1. Open Netscape by clicking on your desktop shortcut or by going to Start > Programs > Netscape.

2. Choose Edit from the menubar at the top of the Messenger window and then select Preferences.

3. The following window opens. Click on Mail & Groups. Then Click on the Identity.

4. Enter your information in the fields. For example, consider the e-mail address johndoe@closecall.com:

Your name: John Doe
Email address: johndoe@closecall.com

5. Click on Mail & Groups. Then Click on the Mail Server. Continuing with our example of johndoe@closecall.com:
Mail Server user name: johndoe (no spaces, all lowercase)
Outgoing mail [SMTP]: smtp1.closecall.com
Incoming mail server: mail1.closecall.com

6. Check POP3.

7. Uncheck Leave messages on server. You can accept all other default settings.

8. Click on OK . Netscape Mail is now configured!
